More often than not, dark circles under the eyes can be prevented. However, in order to do that, you need to know exactly what’s causing them. While there could be several different factors at play,here are five of the most common causes of dark eye circles.
1) Sleep Deprivation
It’s pretty common knowledge that a lack of sleep leads to dark circles under the eyes, but do you know why this is?
Beneath the delicate skin under your eyes lies a network of blood vessels. A lack of sleep causes those blood vessels to dilate, which then results in the skin under your eyes looking darker and more shadowy than usual.
Sleep deprivation also leads to fluid building up in the area around your blood vessels. This gives the skin under your eyes a puffy appearance, exacerbating the shadows.
The skin around your eyes is already thinner than the skin on the rest of your face, and this becomes even more so the older you get. There are two proteins responsible for how smooth, firm and thick your skin is; collagen and elastin. Your skin produces plenty of these while it is young, but production declines with age, resulting in thinner skin.
As mentioned above, blood vessels lie beneath the skin under your eyes. If this skin becomes thinner, those blood vessels then show through more, giving the skin under your eyes a darker appearance.
3) Sun Exposure
Your skin naturally produces a pigment called melanin- this is what gives your skin its color. When exposed to the sun, melanin production increases, because melanin also helps to protect the body from sun damage. With the increased melanin production comes a darker skin tone, and while this may look quite even across the rest of your face and body, the skin under your eyes can often end up darker.
The skin in this area is known forover-producing melanin, giving that region a naturally darker tint. Sun exposure also damages the proteins in your skin, causing your skin to thin,while dilating those blood vessels that lie beneath, meaning dark circles end up three times as visible.

In some cases, there’s nothing that you can really do to prevent dark circles, and this is because your genes are involved.Some people naturally have extremely thin and delicate skin under their eyes,making those blood vessels stand out.
Others naturally have excess blood pooling under their eyes, which stretches the capillaries and causes them to leak,making that region look shadowed and dark.
The shape of your face makes a difference too -some people naturally have deeper tear troughs under their eyes. The shadows that this can cause, especially in certain lighting, can make it look as though you have dark circles.
5) Blue Light
There is still so much research being carried out on the effects that blue light can have on the skin, but results so far are definitely not positive.
Blue light is a specific wavelength of light produced by many of today’s electronic devices. Studies have found that blue-light can cause some serious skin damage. To be specific, it accelerates the skin aging process, having a similar effect to UVA rays from the sun.Over time, this leads to thinner skin, resulting in dark circles.
Blue light also disrupts the body’s natural sleep cycle, leading to sleep deprivation, which is why those two causes often go hand-in-hand together.
If your dark eye circles are extremely noticeable, it could be that you have multiple causes contributing to the issue, making it worth trying to figure out what they are. Whether it’s down to stress leading to a lack of sleep, or leaving your skin unprotected when in the sun, taking the time to prevent dark circles now will help to keep your skin looking its best in the long run.
